SSL.

Special thanks must be given to our member FireLord22 for donating us a SSL certificate. This SSL cert will be used in special cases where encryption is needed most. To start encryption off, we’ll first work on getting our login page encrypted by default.

Email bug fixed, banned bug fixed.

Title speaks for itself.

Forum Up with a few bugs.

The forum is up and running fast. There are a few bugs that we’re still working on. They will be solved shortly. We have also proxied all connections from our old IP to our new IP so that users still using our old DNS will not notice any downtime due to DNS propagation.

Forum is partially up and running.

We have just enabled the forum, however it appears there are a few problems that we need to sort out first.

Nearly there. ETA 30min

Current time: 5:32am Saturday (GMT) – Time in GMT

ETA 2 hours.

We announced that the ETA is 5 hours since 1AM GMT. However we’ve had to push back another hour to be able to work on a few more things. We could potentially open within the hour, however the source code transfer is going rather slower than usual so we will need another hour to get things set up.

Back up restored. Indexing the search.

We’ve finished restoring the back up made of the database. We’ve also just finished setting up the backend of the search running Sphinx. The Sphinx engine is indexing the posts at an amazing rate. The total run time indexing our 11 million posts is roughly 10 minutes, or a rate of 21332 posts per second. Not bad compared to the 5~10 posts per second phpBB search.

Trivia: Migration started at Epoch 1234567890

We, the geek community, relies on something called the epoch time. This is the Unix time that is calculated by the seconds since Jan, 1st, 1970. So it is a significant milestone for the Linux/Unix community to have reached this milestone.

Funny thing is that, this is very close to the time the migration had started. The time in GMT for epoch 1234567890 is Fri, 13 Feb 2009 23:31:30 GMT. This is roughly when I started work on the server.

Back up finished. Configuration roughly 50% done.

We’ve finished backing up the database and we have configured the major components of our server. There is still a lot of work to do before we can put it online. The transition will be smooth from server A to B, despite being a IP change, the DNS updates will not cause further downtime. We will employ a package forwarding iptables technique to forward all of the traffic from the old server to the new server.

Forum disabled. Migration started.

We have disabled the forum in order to be able to run back ups of the database. This is needed to guarantee consistency of the data we see now and the data we see on the new server. The migration will take roughly 5 hours. We have just started the back up of our database and the configuration of all of the softwares we rely on.
